February 2, 2010 - Toronto, Canada - Here are some statistics I found in regards to Sexual Assault here in Canada. In future posts I will give my thoughts on them, but for now just read, be bothered, concerned, and think about them!
Four out of five female undergraduates recently surveyed at Canadian universities said that they had been victims of violence in a dating relationship. Of that number, 29% reported incidents of sexual assault.
A recent survey on date rape showed that 60% of Canadian college-aged males indicated that they would commit sexual assault if they knew they would not be caught.False accusations of rape happen no more often than false reports of other types of crime: about 2 to 4%, which means that 96 to 98% of reports are true.
For now just think about the above statistics and how shocking they are. No one really pays attention to personal safety until something unfortunate or tragic happens. For more information on our programs goto www.safeinternational.biz or by email at chris@safeinternational.biz

Teaching Self-Defense to High School Students
teaching in high schools. Safe has now taught more than 100,000
students and continues to grow each year.
Teaching teenage students poses unique and exciting challenges. With the bombardment of media and entertainment,
trying to entertain teenagers can be one of the most challenging aspects of teaching
self-defense.
Through the years many competitors have
criticized Safe International’s use of humour in teaching such material. Ask any teacher or student who has
experienced one of the Safe courses and they will virtually all tell you that
the method in which it is taught is the key and biggest reason they call Safe
back year after year to instruct their students whether it be males or females.
First, capture their attention and teach it in a way that really leaves a
lasting impression even in the case of a possible attack. Here is a perfect example of how
effective this teaching method is:
A mother called and indicated that her daughter had participated in a Safe course about 4 years earlier. She was in the parking lot of a popular mall in Ottawa, ON with one of her friends who also participated in the course. The one woman was getting in the driver’s side of their van while the other young woman was getting in the passenger side.
Many
students feel that you are more likely to be attacked in some back alley where
in reality it will usually be during your daily routines. Once the stage has been set the
students are more than comfortable sharing their stories, fears, concerns.
We discuss how you will be effectedt emotionally first and that it is important to deal with it in advance and not at the end a possible confrontation. This class is generally 60 minutes in length but could easily go on for hours if time was available.
Focus is always on detecting and avoiding danger but there are times where a physical confrontation cannot be avoided. The next phase of the Safe program is on that aspect of self-defense. Students are taught that self-defense is not martial arts and the worst thing to do is to adopt a stance indicating any knowledge of self protection. While it is important to look confident so attacker does not choose you as a victim, once they do, you need to play into the scenario in a way that will empower you and give you some advantages like the element of surprise or the ability to defuse and talk your way out of a situation.
Students are then taught basic, gross motor
movements including strikes to some of the most vulnerable areas of the
body. This is not martial arts
which might require complex motor skills.
When someone is involved in a high stress situation such as an attack,
the ability to remember any fancy skills goes out the window. You start to get tunnel vision and
making split second decisions become limited. When students take the Safe
course you see the timid nature as most have never struck anything or been
struck themselves. Students are
taken through some striking drills using shields to experience hitting an
object. Within an hour you see the
confidence build and the knowledge that one can defend themselves if they just
keep it basic and simple.
The next topic is on different ways an attacker may grab, restrain, or strike you whether on your feet or on the ground. The instructors at Safe put an emphasis on not waiting to be attacked but rather to strike immediately to avoid any further attack. Students are taught that they might just remember 10% of what is taught. That is being honest! Many companies teach students techniques and then have no problem guaranteeing they will work. At Safe we say that nothing is guaranteed and that avoidance is always first priority but if physical assault cannot be avoided that they must fight back with an unrelenting attitude of survival and indignation.
The culmination of the Safe course is our Simulated Attacks which allows the student to experience while not real, still the adrenaline one would have and the nervousness of a real attack. We take the students through the attack and while we want them to develop confidence we feel it is our duty to make sure they do not get over confident by discussing this a drill and not a real situation. Our goal is to have them leave with some confidence but understanding that the avoidance strategies are still the most important. Some of the quotes we have received from students after this portion of the course are:
“This was the most tiring one to two minutes of my life! I better keep in shape!”
" It felt like it was real even though I knew you would not hurt me”
“This class made me understand that my karate training is different than real self defense”
“I thought having my black belt would help me but it was totally different than the way I train."
Every year teachers tell us that students rate our course as their favourite activity in physical education for the year. This is why we offer advanced courses in future years. Year to year, we can see the confidence and skills increase just from participating in the Safe course for a few hours. The four hours of a Safe course might be the most important four hours of instruction your daughter or son might receive in all of high school. Many people put priorities on trivial useless information when none of it is possible without feeling safe on a day to day basis. To finish off here is a story from a student we taught years ago. I share this story because it is very typical of the stories we consistently hear.
I am a student
from Holy Name of Mary S.S. and I recently took your course in Phys. Ed. class.
I wanted to share a quick story.
“A few nights before
my Phys. Ed. class' Attack Day I took my dog for a walk. It was about 5:30 and
it was getting dark. I wasn't planning on going very far, just along the field
close to my house. Towards the end of the filed is a mailbox. As my dog and I
approached the mailbox he began to act strangely. He's part hound and I figured
he had seen a cat or some other small animal so I made nothing of it. As we got
closer to the mailbox I noticed two males leaning against it. That did it for
my dog, the hair on his back raised like a cat and he began to growl (something
he rarely does), I freaked. For all I know the males were just checking their
mail or hanging out but I didn't risk getting any closer. I turned around and
headed home. I started off with walking, then it turned into a light jog then
running - they didn't follow. Maybe I was over reacting and was letting the
stories from class get into my head, but I remember being told that it was
better to look like a freak and be rude then to stay and see what happens,
putting myself into a stupid position.”
Thanks again for coming top our school and teaching us about being S.A.F.E.
It's an amazing course and something I will take with me everywhere I go.

January 20, 2010- Anywhere, USA- Bad people can only want three things from you. Your money/property, your body or your life. Consider this. Bad guys don't want three things- for it to take to long, to get hurt or get caught. Knowing this can be helpful for assessing your vulnerability at a given point. There are pre-attack indicators that bad guys use and I have found a good video of some of them. Notice how common sense plays into noticing what the pre-attack indicators are. remember to use your instinct, intuition and intelligence to solve a problem.
Many of the concepts that I teach are based upon conflict research of Tony Blauer, who I train under.
Bad things happen and it is important to not be in denail. Be observant and aware. Trust your instinct and remember that bad situations call for uncommon self defense. Any victim of an attack must also be concerned about the "secondary location." This is where a bad guy might take you after the initial attack. Remember the money, body life analogy? It is estimated that over 3% of the world's socient are sociopaths. Consider the following:
Psychopathy (pronounced /saɪˈkɒpəθi/[1][2]) is a personality disorder whose hallmark is a lack of empathy. Researcher Robert Hare, whose Hare Psychopathy Checklist is widely used, describes psychopaths as "intraspecies predators[3][4] who usecharisma, manipulation, intimidation, sexual intercourse and violence[5][6][7] to control others and to satisfy their own needs. Lacking in conscience and empathy, they take what they want and do as they please, violating social norms and expectations without guilt or remorse".[8] "What is missing, in other words, are the very qualities that allow a human being to live in social harmony."[9] ~ wikidepia
The prototypical psychopath has deficits or deviances in several areas: interpersonal relationships, emotion, and self-control. Psychopaths gain satisfaction through antisocial behavior, and do not experience shame, guilt, or remorse for their actions.[15][16][17] Psychopaths lack a sense of guilt or remorse for any harm they may have caused others, instead rationalizing the behavior, blaming someone else, or denying it outright.[18] Psychopaths also lack empathy towards others in general, resulting in tactlessness, insensitivity, and contemptuousness. All of this belies their tendency to make a good, likable first impression. Psychopaths have a superficial charm about them, enabled by a willingness to say anything without concern for accuracy or truth. Shallow affect also describes the psychopath's tendency for genuine emotion to be short lived and egocentric with an overall cold demeanor. Their behavior is impulsive and irresponsible, often failing to keep a job or defaulting ondebts.[18] Psychopaths also have a markedly distorted sense of the potential consequences of their actions, not only for others, but also for themselves. They do not, for example, deeply recognize the risk of being caught, disbelieved or injured as a result of their behaviour.[19] ~ wikipedia
I stress a model that empowers people to detect, deter and defend against attack or violent behavior. The best conflict is the one where you are not involved. How does a person avoid confrontaiton all together?

January 15, 2009- New Year's resolutions aside, fitness is an important aspect of self defense. Most of us lead busy lives and need to budget our time wisely. Those of us who put our bodies under strain through intense training need to find ways to increase overall fitness.
Doing intervals of intense training for as little as six minutes can do more for your fitness levels that cardio workouts that last as long as 45-60 minutes, according to research from McMaster University in Canada. Those who did four to seven minute 30-second bursts of "all-out" exercise, followed by four minutes of recovery time, three times a week for two weeks, significantly increased their endurance capacity over those who did traditional cardiovascular training. Overall, 1.5 hours a week (including rest periods) of intense interval bursts equaled the results of 4.5 hours of regular training.

December 13, 20009- Home invasion is a concern for people across the United States. I published some definitions and examples from different areas of the county. Unfortunately, home invasions are becoming more common and we need to find ways to combat this problem.
Home invasion is the crime of entering a private and occupied dwelling, with the intent of committing a crime, often while threatening the resident of the dwelling. It can also apply if someone is invited into a home and remains on the premises after being asked to leave by the resident. Home invasion differs from burglary, which is usually defined as unlawful entry into any occupied or unoccupied building, with intent to commit one of a list of specified offenses. Home invasion covers an intent to commit any crime. Home invasion may be accompanied by other crimes. Home invaders commit breaking and entering, and are sometimes intent on assault, robbery, rape, or murder. It is commonly held belief that home invasion is a minimal threat to the average person and usually involves invaders who have a personal knowledge of the home and its owner, however the factual basis of this belief is uncertain. Few statistics are available on home invasion as a crime, because it is not technically a crime in most states. Persons charged with "home invasion" are actually charged with robbery, kidnapping, andassault charges. But law enforcement has been seeing the increase in "home-invasion robberies" since at least June 1995, when "home-invasion robberies" were the topic of the cover story of The FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin. They state the crime is considered an alternative to bank or convenience store robberies, which are getting harder to pull off cleanly due to technological advances in security. In this same article, the FBI recommends educating the public about home invasion. Before the term "home invasion" came in use, the term "hot burglary" was often used in the literature. Early references also use "burglary of occupied homes" and "burglar striking an occupied residence" AUSTIN, TX (myFOXaustin) - APD is investigating an early morning home invasion in North Austin, where 4 or 5 suspects attempted to rob a family living on Amesbury Lane, just off North Lamar Blvd.

WASHINGTON – Dallas is now officially one of the nation's top 10 terrorist targets – a designation that sounds alarming but which state and local officials have sought for years, because it means millions in federal funds to beef up security.
The Department of Homeland Security's precise reasons remain secret, but there were plenty of educated guesses Wednesday about the many factors that justify putting Dallas on a list with New York and Washington. They include population growth, huge sports venues, economic impact, and even the fact that an ex-president calls the city home.
"We thought they should be a top-tier city last time ... considering the number of critical infrastructures, key resources, the population, soft targets, the economic importance," said Steven McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety and Gov. Rick Perry's chief homeland security adviser. "We're glad that the threat-based formula that Homeland Security is using finally recognizes that."
The Dallas-Fort Worth area stands to get $25 million next year under the Urban Area Security Initiative, part of a grant program that will provide $832.5 million to 64 high-threat urban areas. The top 10 cities get 63 percent of that.
The designation "may nudge people to be less complacent, but it's not something that means people in Dallas should be running for cover," said Stephen Flynn, who served on Bill Clinton's National Security Council staff and in the White House military office under George W.Bush. "In terms of receiving more assistance ... this puts Dallas in a better position. Of course, it's a competition you probably don't want to be ahead in."
Mayors sought label
On Sept. 30 – six days after the FBI arrested Jordanian Hosam Smadion charges he plotted to blow up a Dallas office tower – the mayors of Dallas, Fort Worth and Arlington wrote to Homeland Security SecretaryJanet Napolitano, urging her to review the region's risk for terrorist attacks and consider elevating it to the top tier.
They cited the Smadi case; the fact that the region has become the nation's fourth-largest metropolitan area, on track to have 8 million residents by 2020; the area's $300 billion economic output and presence of 25 Fortune 500 corporate headquarters; and the half-dozen major sporting events it will host in the next two years alone, including next year's NBA All-Star Game and the 2011 Super Bowl.
But no one can say which factors swayed federal officials to change Dallas' status.
"We cannot pinpoint any one specific reason why they did that," said Rocky Vaz, executive officer for the city of Dallas' Intergovernmental Services office.
In Washington, Homeland Security officials had little to say publicly about the rationale for moving Dallas – along with Boston and Philadelphia – into the top tier of cities facing potential threat.
The additions create a top 10 list for the first time. The Tier 1 list already included New York and Washington, which were attacked on Sept. 11, 2001, plus Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Newark, N.J., and San Francisco.
A "further review" determined that the three newcomers "were more closely aligned to the other Tier 1 urban areas. DHS decided to expand the Tier 1 list to ensure a higher percentage of funding was going to the nation's highest risk urban areas," said Sara Kuban, a department spokeswoman.
