Texas lawmakers are considering a bill (HB1893) that would make it legal for CHL holders to carry guns on school campuses.

House Bill 1893, authored by state Rep. Joe Driver, R-Garland, would allow a concealed handgun licensee to carry their pistol onto a public or private institution of higher education in Texas. Additionally, the bill would prohibit those schools from establishing any policy that would infringe on a license holders ability to carry a handgun on campus. (Note: HB 1893 has 69 co or joint authors).

Supporters say that current regulations, which forbid a concealed handgun licensee from carrying on a college campus, leave students and university employees vulnerable to potential attacks. And while some lawmakers have said they're supporting the bill to prevent a Virginia-Tech style mass shooting at a Texas campus, members of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus say it's the every day crimes they're more concerned about.

"It's about giving someone every opportunity for defense," Guzman said. "What doesn't strike people so much is the over 10,00 cases of sexual assault that occur and the tens of thousands of aggravated assaults that happen on campuses."
