Self defense is a concern for many people, worldwide. This blog will feature self-defense related articles, features, statistics and tectics to make you feel safer at home, work or when you are in public. We also discuss efficient handgun weapon deployment for citizens, law enforcement and military personnel. The blog is published by Robb Hamic.
November 15, 2009- Austin, TX- Is there a correlation between Crossfit and intuitive shooting? I say yes. I recently trained my Crossfit Coach, Chris Hartwell, from Crossfit Central in Austin. He had almost no experience shooting a handgun and none under stress. Take a look at the video below, see how he did and what he has to say about it.
Intuitive or instinctive shooting is easy to learn and it works for inexperienced shooters, tactical operators or anything in between. It is my belief that we all come pre-programmed to defend ourselves with a handgun.
Crossfit is a fitness system created by Greg Glassman and has instructors and centers worldwide. It trains people to be in peak functional performance and uses natural movements. It is absolutely my workout of choice. Chris Hartwell is my Crossfit Coach and he provides instruction at Crossfit Central in Austin or privately.
Summit Self Defense provides instinctive shooting and gun deployment, concealed handgun licensing and carry programs in Texas and New Mexico. Summit has several instructors and provides training locally in Albuquerque and Taos New Mexico. Ryan Fellows is a senior instructor for Summit's New Mexico Operations. Robb Hamic is the Chief Instructor and provides training to corporations, individuals, law enforcement, women and military locally, nationally or internationally.

November 11, 2009- Albuquerque, NM- So you just bought a
firearm………..now what? Many people have recently purchased firearms and are now
wondering what is the next step. I get calls everyday from folks looking for
training. It isn’t enough just to own a gun for self defense. You must train
regularly and under the right conditions to be able to use your firearm if you
must rely on it to save your life of the lives of the ones you love. I provide concealed (CCW) carry training in Albuquerque.
It is important to understand the
operation of your firearm. You first need to read the owners manual, many
people take that for granted. I often see people at the range who don’t know
how to load their gun or how to operate the safeties……..etc. Take the time to
learn the nuances of how your particular weapon works. Every manufacturer has
some subtle differences in the basic operation of their firearms.
Once you are ready to handle your
firearm, there are some very important safety rules to follow that apply
anytime you handle a gun. These rules must be obeyed at all times, whether you
are at the range, home, gun store, or any other place where firearms are
involved.
1.Treat
every gun as if it is loaded at all times
2.Muzzle
control- don’t point a gun at anything you aren’t willing to destroy
3.Trigger
discipline- don’t place your finger on the trigger until you are ready to fire
4.Know
your target- be aware of your target and what is beyond, and what may pass in
front of your target
While practicing safely with your
firearm, there are some keys that will help you to become better. These are the
points to be followed.
1.Grip-
the firing hand is high on the back strap firm grasp, not white knuckled
2.Sight
alignment- the relationship between the front sight, the rear sight and your
firing-side eye
3.Sight
picture- where the sight alignment is place on the target
4.Trigger
control- Proper placement of the trigger finger on the trigger and the squeeze
of the trigger without adversely affecting the sight alignment
5.Follow
through- the shot is fired, but how about the next one. You must be able to
come back on target quickly. “Did I hit, does he need another hit, and are
there any more threats?”
There is a right way to grip your
firearm. It isn’t rocket science, but you do need
to learn how to do it properly. There are many ways to stand
and to move while shooting safely. I teach in a dynamic environment that “takes
the training to the street”. In a violent stressful situation we will be lucky
to be half as good as we are on the range. I want to make the best you can be.
Have you ever trained to shoot one handed, or with your weak hand only? How
about reloading with only your weak hand? What if you are wounded in your
dominant arm and lose its use? Is the fight over? Are you going to just give up
and die? Not if you train with me!
I
have trained with many of the best instructors in the world. I am a certified
Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor, a Personal Defense Readiness (PDR)
Fundamentals Coach and a Certified Concealed Carry Instructor for New Mexico. I feel
very strongly about our rights to keep and bear arms, but I am passionate about
the proper and safe ways to do so.
I teach people in many capacities, whether or not you are
interested in obtaining a permit to carry a concealed weapon. I hold regular
classes as well as private and semi-private lessons. Feel free to call me or
email me for more information
Ryan Fellows, New Mexico Concealed Weapons Instructor
We as a society are taught from a
very young age to be nice to people and to ‘treat others as you would like them
to treat you’. These aren’t bad traits; in fact it would be a much better place
if everyone adhered to the rules and to these ideals. Unfortunately, as
we all know that is not necessarily the case.
There are those in our society who
prey on good people. They like to target the ones who think that ‘it will never
happen to me’.There are people
who are unwilling to respect others and expect us to give in to their demands.
Those of us who aren’t thugs or thieves, who respect others, need to understand
that it isn’t a bad thing to say ‘enough is enough’.
If you were walking down the street
and see, for instance, an elderly person being harassed, would you lend
assistance? If your family member were being assaulted, would you get
involved?Of course you would!
Most of us would absolutely help in these situations. Why then won’t you stand
up for yourself? You must have this conversation with yourself, giving yourself
permission to fight back.
We all have an obligation to be
proactive in our own self-defense. It is an important decision that must be
made personally, by each of us. Make a conscious decision to say ‘no more’. ‘No
longer am I going to be the doormat to every body who wishes to take advantage
of me’. You must decide what is important and is worth living for and use that
for motivation. This may be your spouse, your children, your home, your car…. etc.
You have to decide what it is that will make you get up if you are down on the
ground and being injured by someone.
One of my instructors and mentors,
Tony Blauer, talks about “being your own body guard”, I think that this is
profound. We all need to think about this and act on it. If you don’t protect
yourself, who will? If you are seriously injured in a violent confrontation in
the grocery store parking lot tonight on your way home from work, who is going
to take care of your spouse or your children or those most important to you in
your absence? These are the things we must come to grips with.
Self-defense is an obligation we
must all make. I train people of all ages to defend themselves in a violent
confrontation. I train law enforcement, military, and civilians in close
quarter combatitives and firearms use. I have studied several forms of martial
arts and continue to train with many of the best instructors in the world. I am
committed to teaching good, law abiding people to defend themselves and their
loved-ones. I teach regularly all over the country and am a certified concealed
carry instructor for New Mexico and a Personal Defense Readiness Instructor. I
specialize in training women and love to teach. I am available for private,
semi-private and group lessons in your area or at our facility in Albuquerque.

November 9, 2009- Austin, TX- I find that my fitness is a vital component of my overall satisfaction with life. My health is dependent upon my fitness and I am in the business of providing professional self defense training to others. I have to be in peak physical condition. I train people to defend themselves and fight. I completely endorse Crossfit, created by Greg Glassman and I believe that it the most advanced delivery system of fitness available.
Functional strength, endurance and conditioning is not an option for some people. This is some additional information from the Crossfit website:
CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.
The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.
The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree not kind. Our terrorist hunters, skiers, mountain bike riders and housewives have found their best fitness from the same regimen.
Thousands of athletes worldwide have followed our workouts posted daily on this site and distinguished themselves in combat, the streets, the ring, stadiums, gyms and homes.
Crossfit has affiliates worldwide and I have trained at several facilities. My home gym is Crossfit Central in Austin and my Coach is Chris Hartwell. It is fair to say that I am addicted to my workouts. I feel that my conditioning and overall performance is based in large part to my Crossfit workouts, good diet, proper mindset and other factors. I have met hundreds of Crossfitters who work in many different kinds of jobs and need to performa at different levels. Crossfit helps them to achieve their goals. I know more women who Crossfit than men. My wife is a Crossfitter and it is fun to train together.
Crossfit was introduced to me by Tony Blauer of Blauer Tactical Systems. I find that the movements are productive to my self defense instruction, Personal Defense Readiness (PDR) and Ballistic Micro-Fight Instructor training. The bottom line for me is that I can fight longer and have more speed and power in doing my job. I Crossfit three times per week and run, spar and do alternate training two other days per week. I feel great and I am looking forward to my workout tomorrow.
November 9, 2009- Austin, TX- A increasing number of women are seeking concealed handgun licensing in Texas due to rising fear of violence and a desire to protect themselves. "I am receiving a large number of calls form women in the Austin Area seeking gun training," says Robb Hamic, Chief Instructor for Summit Self Defense. "I am happy to provide quality and realistic gun training in Austin for small groups or privately to fit my client's busy schedules."
Handguns are used 2.5-2.8 million times per year in self defense situations by private citizens. Many people in Texas own guns and people should know how to deploy a handgun, rifle or shotgun if you keep one in the house. "We live in a violent society and the Department of Justice reports that 6 out of 1000 Americans will be the victim of aggravated assault each year," says Hamic. Everyone knows that the United States is increasingly more violent and some people have increased vulnerabilities, such as women, the elderly and people who are in certain risk categories.
Too many concealed handgun education programs don't train students for the reality of a fight. Too many firearms qualifications are conducted with no stress and in a very controlled environment. "We all revert back to our lowest level of training in violent, stressful situations," he says. If you train to shoot guns by firing slowly at a paper target please be careful. People encounter mean, violent criminals each day/ night that use violence to further their objectives. If you have to use a gun in a defensive situation it will be fast, stressful and violent," says Robb Hamic. Are you ready?
Watch the below video for more information and Mr. Hami'c reasoning on why he educates his students in use of force, imminent jeopardy, legal considerations, scenarios, bad guy behavior, emotions, pre-fight phycology and more.
Robb Hamic is the Chief Instructor of Summit Self Defense. Robb provides firearms and defensive tactic training to Austin Police Department and over a dozen other law enforcement agencies across the US, military units and thousands of people per year. Robb teaches from a highly evolved self defense system that he advances throughout every year. Robb is a women's self defense master instructor and expert. He trains people in all levels of use of force including: combatitives, hand to hand tactics, close quarter, handgun deployment, Taser, OC Spray (mace), knife, de-escalation of force, conflict avoidance, rape prevention, safety, use of force, imminent jeopardy and other guns systems and tactics. Summit operates three schools across the US and is currently expanding rapidly.
Robb's wife and former Sheriff's Deputy, Marie, will assist in delivering this training. Marie and Robb have seen the aftermath of violence against women firsthand and they now work together to give women and people options. November 8, 2009- Steiner Ranch, Texas (Austin)- I have made arrangements to host women's (others may come) self defense classes in Steiner Ranch to address the growing concern about violence against women and girls. I live in Steiner and I want to do my part to reach out to the community to provide self defense options. The classes are open to anyone on a first come first served RSVP basis (limit 30 people per class). The cost is only $50 per person and will cover at two hour class on awareness, detection of danger, scenarios, the most effective self defense that a woman (or anyone else) could use against an attack, imminent jeopardy and legal use of force considerations.
I have decided to host at least two classes per month. I may expand based on current interest and RSVP's. My class is relevant, easy to fit into your schedule, inexpensive and sought after. I travel across the country delivering this training and now it is available to Austin residents, locally. This is an open class intended for women but men and children over the age of 14 may attend.
Most 'self defense training only focuses on some form of defense, whether it is realistic or not. In my opinion, that way of teaching can be harmful and leave you with no other option other than fighting. Women and girls don't want to fight and they don't want to stand and fight toe to toe with an attacker. The main objective of a person, including myself, is to get away from the attacker as fast as possible. While the idea of punishing an attacker is nice, it is impractical and gives people who train in these types of systems a false sense of security. A person who is attacked needs to know enough to keep themselves and their loved ones safe until they can get away (in most cases). Self defense needs to be simple, effective and easy to remember because all fancy techniques disintegrate under stress.
Consider these facts:
A bad guy wants only three things: Property, your body or your life
In 2008- 6 out of 1000 people were the victim of aggravated assault in the US (an injury that could cause death or great bodily harm)
47% of all crime is unreported
We all know that things aren't getting better

November 3, 2009- Steiner Ranch, TX- A second abduction attempt of a woman happened last night in Steiner Ranch. This is the second attack against a women in two weeks. Steiner Ranch is a master planned community outside Austin Texas where most crime remains relatively low.
This is a shocking development. Apparently, a man in a white truck followed a woman jogger as she ran off of one of the main roads. He repeatedly told her to 'get in the truck.' She refused and ran off into a public place, escaping this second abduction attempt. This is the second attack on a woman in Steiner Ranch in two weeks. The first attack occurred as a woman was jogging at approximately 9 P.M. She was followed by two men in a white truck for several blocks. The truck pulled up alongside of her and the passenger got out and chased this woman as she screamed and ran into a public place. Travis County Sheriff's Deputies were called and this attack is under investigation.
Kidnappings are becoming more frequent in the United States and additional (and more violent) crime typically occurs at a secondary location. I tell all of my students to resist with all possible means in an assault. Never go willingly to a secondary location and never go willingly into an attacker's car. Most people have the means to resist an attack- even if it is to run away screaming. If you are forced to defend yourself against a violent attack- fight with all you have. Women and girls should seek practical self defense advice.
Summit Self Defense is a leader in providing women's and girl's self defense classes and seminars in Steiner Ranch. We understand that most people don't have a lot of time to commit to classes or weekly lessons that is why we taylor effective self defense classes to a two hour time-frame. We give effective self defense instruction that works in real life situations. We speak to small or large groups or organizations and we are available immediately. Please refer to our website for more information.
